2003 Eastern Open

Chess players in the Washington, DC area have a chance to observe a top quality tournament in the Eastern Open, continuing through Monday at the Wyndham Hotel downtown just off Thomas Circle at 14th and M streets NW.

Miller Is New VA State Champ

Daniel Miller won the Virginia Closed State Championship, played in Richmond over Labor Day weekend, with a perfect 5-0 score. Justin Burgess won the amateur title with the same result. The VCF web site has details.

Unification Match Cancelled_

Lubosh Kavalek anounces in his Washington Post column that the world championship unification match the World Chess Federation (FIDE) canceled the title match between Ruslan Ponomariov and Garry Khtmlarov, scheduled for this month in Yalta, Ukraine has been cancelled. Ponomariov's last minute demands are blamed.
